Here’s another important question to ask when you’re shopping for a moving company in Roanoke, Salem, Blacksburg, or anywhere in Virginia:

Is your personnel qualified and experienced?

Here are some quick facts about the personnel at Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc.

  • We don’t hire any crew members with less than five years of experience. Many of our movers have been moving-truck owners/operators in the past and have 20-30 years of experience. It’s important to us that our movers know exactly how to best handle your most precious belongings. Some companies show unexperienced movers a few training videos and call them “certified.” All training and experience standards are not the same!
  • We provide “crew continuity” for our customers. The same movers who pack and/or load for your move will unload and/or unpack for your move. With many moving companies, the crew and the driver negotiate payment at the location of the move. This can create a huge problem if there is a disagreement. Sometimes movers will walk off the job, start fights, or purposely do a poor job. We have zero of these variables because our movers are hand-picked and employed only by us. There are no on-site negotiations. This is a huge advantage for our customers.
  • Our movers wear Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., uniforms, so they are easily recognizable as your movers.
  • Our movers are drug tested and carry medical cards.

Choosing Movers Part 1

Are you shopping for a professional moving company? At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want to make sure you know what questions to ask to make the best decision for your moving situation. This series of blogs will introduce important questions to ask when choosing your movers.

Are you licensed and insured for my type of move?

The very first thing the customer must determine is the type of move they are going to make. This information matters because the trucking business is regulated by the USDOT and the state.

A local move is considered within 30 miles from the point of pickup while staying in the same state. To be considered a local move, you cannot cross state lines. The moving company can go anywhere within the state for a local-move pick up. Legally the company can then go only 30 miles from that pick-up point.

A long-distance move that stays within one state is called an intrastate move. This type of move allows moving companies to move anywhere within the state. There are different types of bonds and insurance for intrastate moves.

If your move is across state lines, it’s an intercontinental move.

All three types of moves require licensing. All three require different insurance and bonds. Some companies don’t qualify or can’t get these bonds, insurance, and licensing. If these companies are caught moving, the truck can be impounded, and the driver will be fined. There is no telling what will happen to the household items on the truck if this happens. The customer is left with no recourse.

The Moving Crew Matters!

When shopping for a professional moving company, many people don’t think to ask about crew members. But the quality of your moving crew can make a big difference in your moving experience!

For a local move, all of our movers have a minimum of five years of moving experience. We don’t use temp services or part-time help. We don’t hire high-school or college students. Even if high-school and college students work summers, that is only 1-2 years of combined experience. That’s not enough when it comes to our customers’ antiques, artwork, heirlooms, pianos, etc.

The Size of Your Local Move Matters!

Considering hiring a professional moving company? At Heritage Moving & Storage Inc., we can handle your packing, moving, and storage with excellence.

First we’ll determine the size of your move by conducting a walk-through in your home. The walk-through is used to determine the number of men and trucks needed to do the job. This allows us to give you an accurate price for your move.

Here’s how we look at it:

The price of your local move is based on an hourly rate for “move time.”
The hourly rate varies depending on the time of the year.

“Move time” is the time it takes for loading and unloading your belongings.
For every room of furniture you have, you can estimate about one hour of move time.

For up to 6-7 rooms of furniture, we typically use a three-man crew and one truck. For more than 6-7 rooms, we use a crew of four or five men and two trucks (or two trips).
If you you have a big move, we still want to finish the job in 7 -8 hours, which is why we add to the crew. If you have a four-bedroom house, we could use a three-man crew, but the job would take 10-12 hours. That’s too much wear and tear on you and on our movers.

If you’re moving around the corner, we can make two trips using one truck. If you’re moving an hour away, we’ll use two trucks to save time and make the move more economical for you.

If fuel costs spike, we do not raise our hourly rates.
Instead, we may add a fuel charge to offset some of the fuel costs. With Heritage Moving & Storage Inc., you will always know exactly what you’re paying for.

Your Local Move

When you call us, we’ll help you determine if we are the right company for your moving needs. We truly want to make sure we’re a good “fit” for your unique moving situation.

During the phone call, we’ll ask a series of questions to find out if we can price your move over the phone. If you have four rooms of furniture or fewer, we generally can provide an accurate price over the phone. (This amount of rooms is typical of one- or two-bedroom apartments or in divorce situations where only a few rooms of furniture are being moved out of the home.)

If your local move will include more than four rooms of furniture, we’ll schedule a time to do a walk-through in your home. The walk-through lasts about 30 minutes. It allows us to get a visual of the contents of the home and evaluate the logistics of moving out of the house. We pay special attention to the size and number of areas, indoors and outdoors. (Many people forget to include outdoor patio areas, sheds, garages, and basement storage when estimating their number of rooms.)

The walk-through helps us determine the number of movers and trucks needed for your move. From there we can determine an accurate price.

Moving Day With Kids

Moving day with kids can be challenging for any parent. If your child is having an “off” day and is demanding attention or misbehaving, your focus will quickly go from your move to your child, and this can slow down moving day. It can also unnerve and frustrate you on an already emotional day.

At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want to help you be prepared for every part of your move. Here are some tips for helping you and your kids enjoy a peaceful moving day:

1. Tell your children ahead of time exactly what will happen on moving day. Don’t let the events of moving day be a surprise to your children. Kids struggle with change just like adults. Help your children be prepared and feel as secure as possible throughout the moving process.

2. If your children are old enough to help, make moving day a fun project. Have your  children help with packing their rooms before moving day. Ask them to help you label boxes. Ask them to help organize items you aren’t sending with the movers. Try to get the kids involved.

3. Ask your children to be careful and safe. Let your children know that the moving truck is not a place to play. Ask them to stay away from movers carrying heavy furniture.

4. Provide a pack of items to keep your children occupied. Put together an assortment of age-appropriate books, coloring books, games, puzzles, etc. These packs help on moving day and can also help if you have a long drive or flight to your new home.

5. Consider asking a babysitter or a family member to spend the day with your children. Your children will have a great time, and you’ll be fully available for moving-day responsibilities.

Moving Day With Pets

Pets are part of our families, and at Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want to make sure that your pet is safe and well cared for on moving day.

As we discussed in the previous post, there are few potential dangers to pets on moving day such as movers with heavy furniture, open doors, and a large, open moving truck. Here are some ideas for how to ensure your pet’s safety on moving day:

1. Ask a family member or friend to keep your pet on moving day.

2. Have a professional keep your pet on moving day. This could include scheduling your pet’s grooming for moving day. Or you could schedule your pet’s vet checkup on moving day. You might also board your pet for the day.

3. If you’d prefer to have your pet close by on moving day, we suggest you put your pet in a bathroom with food and water. Once the movers clear out a bedroom, you can transfer your pet to the bedroom for more space.

Moving With Pets and Kids

With all the planning that goes into moving, it’s easy to forget that you must do a little planning for your kids and pets for moving day.

At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want your kids and pets to be safe and to enjoy your family’s moving process. During a move there are several moving-day issues that can occur with kids and pets.

1. In decent weather, the movers will want to prop open your doors so they can easily move between the house and the truck. If you have young children or pets, they could wander out the door. This is a potentially dangerous situation.

2. During the winter, although your door may not be propped open, the door will be opening and closing constantly throughout moving day. This means it will be quite cold in the house and may be uncomfortable for young children.

3. Pets and kids can get caught up in the excitement of moving day. They may try to climb onto the truck or they may get in the way of movers carrying heavy furniture. These situations can be dangerous.

4. An unruly child quickly takes a parent’s focus off of the move. If you’re are spending the day tending to kids, you may not be available to answer questions and give directions to the movers. This can slow down the moving process.

The most important thing is planning. When preparing for your move, make sure you have plenty of time to get organized, adding pets and kids to your moving “to-do” list. In our next two blog posts, we’ll give you ideas for how to plan for your kids and pets on moving day.

Avoid Damage

In our past four blog posts, we’ve been discussing damage during a move and how to handle it.

Unfortunately damage does happen on some moves. Here are some principles to remember when you’re considering a professional moving company and wanting to avoid damage as much as possible:

1. Your move is only going to be as good as your movers. There are specific techniques in handling furniture, and an experienced crew is going to take much better care of your belongings because they have developed technique. With an experienced crew, you will also have much less damage of the structures in your house such as door jambs, walls, and corners. Your chances of damage go up drastically when you move yourself or hire a company with little experience. At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we only hire crew members with extensive experience. We won’t hire anyone without a minimum of five years in the business. Most of our crew members have had 15-30 years in the business. You can be sure that our crew members have the best technique.

2. If and when damage does occur during a move, it’s important that someone takes responsibility and fixes or replaces the item. When you move yourself, you’ll keep your costs down, but if there’s damage, you have nobody to turn to. With a professional moving company, you have someone to turn to if damage occurs. And if you hire Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc. for your move, we offer free insurance coverage for your belongings with no deductible. It doesn’t get any better than that!

3. Equipment is an important element when avoiding damage during a move. At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we have the best, thickest moving pads. Determining Damage

At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want to give you information to help your moving experience be smooth and as low stress as possible. This includes preparing you in case you experience damage during your move. Damage doesn’t occur with every move, but unfortunately it happens now and then to any and every professional moving company.

If Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., is your moving company, and you discover that something is damaged, simply call us. We will verify the damage, and then either schedule a repair, find a replacement, or reimburse you for the value of the item at the time of the damage.

How do we verify the damage? On long-distance moves, we do an inventory before anything is moved to make notes about any damage that existed prior to the move. This is so the movers and the customers are aware of the condition of the items before the the items are moved out of the house.

For local moves, the inventory is more of a verbal process. Since local moves are billed hourly, most customers do not want to invest the time in a full inventory.

For furniture, the damage should be caught right away at the new location. When it’s time to unload, one of our crew members checks each piece of furniture as it goes into the house, making notes on the condition. The customer should also check the condition of the furniture at that time. Once the customer signs, saying that he or she has received all of the furniture, typically damage claims may no longer be made. (We make some exceptions. Most moving companies will not make exceptions.)

For items that were packed, you have 30 days to make a claim. This gives you about a month to get your boxes unpacked and check your belongings.
