Should I pack myself?

Deciding to pack yourself for your move or to allow a moving company to pack for you can be a difficult decision. At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want to help our customers in Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Vinton, Salem, Blacksburg, Botetourt County, and all of Southwest Virginia make the best decision for their specific needs.

If you choose to pack yourself, the biggest advantage is the savings. The cost of a packing service depends on the size of the move. If you hire a moving company to do a complete pack for an apartment, it will likely cost about $500 to $1,000. The cost for a moving company to pack a house may be $2,000 to $4,000.

This cost may seem overwhelming. At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we offer our customers a partial-packing service, also known as a hybrid pack. This service is for customers who don’t want to incur the expense of a full pack, but need help in certain areas. In this case, the customer packs the items he or she is comfortable packing. Then we pack the things the customer may not have the expertise or materials to pack well—things like pictures, mirrors, glass table tops, lamps, and/or specialty items. We want to offer as many options as possible to help our customers streamline their expenses.

Of course you can eliminate the packing cost altogether by packing yourself. A huge advantage of packing yourself is that it allows you to purge and weed out what you don’t want to move. Why pay to move things you don’t want to keep? Purging could possibly lower the total cost of your move.

Packing is a huge, time-consuming task. How do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time. Start the packing process weeks before your move date, and pack five or six boxes per day. This is a way to pack so that packing doesn’t dominate your life, yet the job gets done. Over the course of several weeks, you’ll find yourself packed up and ready to go.

At Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., we want to provide the best services to meet your needs and your budget. “Let our family move your family!”
