You can save a lot of money by moving yourself, but it takes a lot of planning. We at Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., want to give you some tips on moving yourself. In our last blog post, we discussed packing yourself. Now let’s talk about vehicles for moving yourself.

If you’re moving across town, you may be able to use your own pickup truck or van. You can pack up the vehicle and make multiple trips until you have moved everything.

If you borrow a trucks or vans from family members or friends, make sure  you give your family members or friends enough time to get your moving date on their schedules so they can plan around your move. Chances are, if you need to borrow a vehicle, you need to move on a weekend for greater availability.

If you’re moving further away, you’ll need to rent a truck. Get quotes on truck rentals so you can make an informed decision. Consider these major moving truck rental companies: Uhaul, Ryder, Penske, Budget, and Enterprise. There may be smaller, independent rental companies as well that you can call.

Be sure to accurately assess your belongings to get the correct truck size. You do not want to fill up the truck and realize that you don’t have room for everything you want to move.

Be sure to ask about insurance, and make sure your truck rental company has moving equipment available for rent. You likely will need dollies, straps, and moving pads to complete your move.

Most of the time, you can reserve a truck online or by telephone. Reserve the truck several weeks out to ensure availability, and make sure you get a confirmation number.

We hope you find these tips helpful. Keep an eye on our blog as we continue our “Moving Yourself” series.
